Atlanta suburb to require blankets at EV charging stations to help smoother EV fires

A town in Georgia is going to require that electric vehicle charging stations have fire blankets available in case of an EV fire.

The city council in Milton, a suburb northeast of Atlanta with a population of about 40,000 people, approved a measure Monday that was proposed by the local fire department. 

According to Fox 5 Atlanta, the Milton Deputy Fire Chief and Fire Marshall Alex Fortner said that EV fires need up to 30,000 gallons of water, about 60 times that of a car with an internal combustion engine. 

The fire blankets are a “proactive attempt” to help smother these fires and limit damage. The ordinance doesn’t apply to home charging ports. The town has three public charging stations.
