Energy Department pledges $600M to 'modernize' America's 'water power' for climate change
Sec. Granholm claimed that harnessing power from water is key to combatting so-called climate change.
The Energy Department is making available nearly $600 million to "modernize and advance water power across America" in the large interest of slowing “climate change.”
The agency in making the announcement said having the money available is part of the Biden administration's "Investing in America" plan, which includes re-imagining "hydroelectric power" and the advancement of "advance marine energy."
The announcement also reiterated President Biden’s stated goal of "100% clean electricity by 2035 and a net-zero-emissions economy by 2050."
Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm at the same time, said water power is "integral tool to fight against climate change.”
With the announcement, hydroelectric facilities are now able to apply for some of the $553.5 million grant money for related projects that will "enhance existing hydropower and pumped storage facilities for capital improvements directly related to grid resilience, dam safety, and environmental improvements."
