DeSantis signs bill prohibiting offshore wind, removing 'climate change’ references from state laws

Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed into law a bill that will remove all explicit mentions of climate change from many state laws, while prohibiting wind energy construction within a mile of Florida’s coastlines.

The new law, which the governor signed Wednesday, also directs the state to only “promote the cost-effective development and use of a diverse supply of domestic energy resources," and it strengthens protections against bans on gas stoves and repeals Obama-era climate policies.

“We’re restoring sanity in our approach to energy and rejecting the agenda of the radical green zealots. Furthermore, we’re going to ensure foreign adversaries like China have no foothold in our state,” DeSantis said in a post on X.

In another post sharing summaries of bills he signed Wednesday, DeSantis said, “Florida rejects the designs of the left to weaken our energy grid, pursue a radical climate agenda, and promote foreign adversaries.”
