Apple is reportedly laying off hundreds of employees. The announcement comes weeks after the company decided to pull the plug on development of an electric vehicle.

Citing filings with the state of California, the San Francisco Chronicle reported the company is laying off 614 employees in city of Santa Clara.

The filings don’t mention the electric car project. According to the Chronicle, the impacted positions include machine shop managers, hardware engineers and product design engineers.

The multibillion-dollar EV project started in 2014, aiming to produce a fully autonomous EV with a luxury interior and a voice-guided navigation system. In the face of slowing demand for EVs, on top of technical challenges the project faced, senior executives decided to kill the project.
