The consumer price index Friday showed that energy costs fell in January.

The overall index for energy fell 1.5% in January, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics' monthly report

The gasoline index fell 3.2% over the month, and the index for electricity fell 0.1% in January. The natural gas index, on the other hand, increased 1% over the period.

The report also showed inflation trended downward 2.4%.

“Energy and gas prices continue to fall as President Trump pares back irrational ‘green energy’ mandates that cripple families in the midst of a severe winter,” Carrie Sheffield, senior policy analyst for the Independent Women’s Center for Economic Opportunity, said in a statement.
