Manchin urges fellow Democrat Biden to negotiate with GOP House leader McCarthy on debt ceiling
“If this administration does not honor what it said it would do … I will vote to repeal my own bill.”
West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin is urging fellow Democrat President Joe Biden to negotiate with Republicans over raising the debt ceiling.
"He cannot play Russian roulette with the debt ceiling," Manchin said Monday on the Fox News Channel. "That is going to be disastrous for our economy and all of our people. ... You’ve got to get in a room and work out the differences for the sake of this country."
Manchin, a moderate Democrat representing a deeply conservative state, is frequently critical of Biden and the most liberal wing of their party.
He has recently focused on what he says was Biden and the wing's pledge before the final Senate vote on the $384 billion Inflation Reduction Act, which passed without a single Republican vote, to use the money to pay down the national debt and make the country less dependent on foreign energy, as a matter of national security.
On Monday night, on Fox, he said: "They’ve disregarded that completely – what was agreed upon. And they know exactly what we agreed upon.”
Manchin also went as far as to say he would attempt to repeal the legislation if Biden does not live up to his end of the bargain.
"I will vote to repeal my own bill," he said.
