Thunberg angers fellow climate protester over her pro-Palestine views at rally
“As a climate justice movement, we have to listen to the voices of those who are being oppressed and those who are fighting for freedom and for justice," Thunberg told tens of thousands at the climate rally.
Swedish climate celebrity Greta Thunberg had her speech interrupted at a large climate protest in Amsterdam on Monday when a man tried to take away her microphone.
The man objected to Thunberg apparently using the protest to promote pro-Palestinian views.
The Times of Israel reports Thunberg had invited a Palestinian and Afghan woman onstage to speak prior to the incident.
“As a climate justice movement, we have to listen to the voices of those who are being oppressed and those who are fighting for freedom and for justice. Otherwise, there can be no climate justice without international solidarity,” Thunberg said to the audience of tens of thousands after the women's speech.
A man approached Thunberg, grabbed the microphone, and said, “I come here for a climate demonstration, not a political view.”
A brief scuffle followed, with Thunberg saying repeatedly, “Calm down,” before the man was pulled off stage.
The crowd then began to chant, “No climate justice on occupied land.”
Last month, the 20-year-old activist posted a photo of her holding a “Stand with Gaza” sign. One of the people pictured with Thunberg had a toy octopus, which is often used in anti-Jewish propaganda.
Following criticism of the post, which also came from the state of Israel, Thunberg deleted the post, only to repost the photo later with the toy cropped out.
Thunberg stated she was “completely unaware” it could be interpreted as a symbol for antisemitism.
