Homeless man arrested in connection to California Palisades fire burning over 1,150 acres

A California homeless man has been charged with arson in connection to the 1,158 acre brush fire in Pacific Palisades, on the west side of Los Angeles, which was 47% contained as of Tuesday night.

Ramon Santos Rodriguez was arrested Sunday when he emerged from the burned brush and was spotted by a private security officer who reported him to the police.

On Tuesday, the 48-year-old was charged with one felony count each of arson of a structure or forest and arson during a state of emergency, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

"Helicopter pilots had seen him make multiple sets and ID'd him starting additional fires," said Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson Erik Scott. "So in fact we did have him, not just as an arson suspect, but we were able to completely ID and confirm that, and that’s why we arrested him."

About 1,000 residents were evacuated from the area and others were warned of possible evacuations before the fire was brought under control.  

Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Ralph Terrazas said during a press conference that the suspect was treated for smoke inhalation.
