Tropical Storm Erin strengthened into a hurricane on Friday, with the potential to become a Category 4.

Erin is the first hurricane of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, Fox Weather reported. The season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, with Sept. 10 being the peak.

The National Hurricane Center said that Hurricane Erin reached 75 mph Friday morning, making it a hurricane, after it was designated a tropical storm on Monday. Category 4 hurricanes have winds reaching at least 130 mph.

Anguilla, Barbuda, St. Barthelemy, St. Martin, Saba and St. Eustatius have tropical storm watches in effect for the next 48 hours.

The center of the hurricane is expected to move near or just north of the northern Leeward Islands over the weekend, according to the NHC. The hurricane's exact impact on the U.S. East Coast, the Bahamas, and Bermuda is still uncertain.

Thus far, it does not appear that the Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, or Puerto Rico will take a direct hit from the hurricane.

There have just been four tropical storms during the 2025 hurricane season.
