F-35 fighter crashes near San Diego air base

An F-35 fighter jet crashed at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar near San Diego, Calif., on Friday, according to Fox5.

Photos showed smoke emanating from the aircraft. The pilot ejected during the incident.

Additional video footage showed the aircraft in flames as firefighting vehicles attempted to quell the blaze.

The F-35 is one of the most advanced military aircraft currently in service. The nature and cause of the accident are unknown as of press time.
