Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, will face her confirmation hearing for director of national intelligence on Jan. 30.

The Senate Intelligence Committee scheduled her hearing on Thursday, The Hill reported. Trump's nomination of Gabbard has raised some concerns within the Senate over her views on reigning in the security state and past comments about former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Gabbard unsuccessfully ran for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2020, but later left the party. She joined the Republicans on the campaign trail in 2024 and helped President Donald Trump prepare for his debate with then-Vice President Kamala Harris.

In mid-December, she met with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and has since expressed support for reauthorizing Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which allows for the warrantless surveillance of foreigners abroad but has faced criticism over its ability to sweep up information on Americans in the process.

Gabbard previously opposed the surveillance tool, but reversed course this month, in a move that seems to have some lawmakers viewing her more favorably. She remains one of Trump's more contentious nominees.
