Florida Republican Rep. Matt Gaetz has announced that he would introduce legislation to defund special counsel Jack Smith's investigations into former President Donald Trump.

"I will be introducing legislation to DEFUND Jack Smith’s witch hunt against President Trump. They are attacking our democracy and engaging in election interference right now," he stated. "The United States Congress has the capability to stop this election interference, and we must act immediately!"

Smith has already brought charges against Trump in relation to his alleged mishandling of classified documents recovered from his Mar-a-Lago estate. Trump, for his part, recently announced that he had received a target letter in Smith's Jan. 6 probe, contending it signaled an upcoming second indictment.

Gaetz made the announcement on his podcast, acknowledging that such a plan would never secure President Joe Biden's signature, nor a vote in the Senate.

He did, however, contend that such a measure would permit lawmakers to go on record over the matter, telling his audience that "you deserve to know where your members of Congress are counted."
