Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich says that the coronavirus pandemic has been an excuse for leaders on the political left to reveal their true colors.

The former top House Republican said that "if you're a left-wing governor or a left-wing mayor like [New York City Mayor] deBlasio, COVID became the excuse to be who you really are. And it's like the mask was dropped," he remarked during an interview on the John Solomon Reports podcast.

Gingrich mentioned Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy and described them as "bad people" who "enjoy power," "lie routinely" and "like coercion."

"They like the sense that I'm the boss and you're not," he said.

Gingrich said there has been a shift from the law serving as a protection for Americans into a situation in which "the law is hunting you and the law wants to destroy you."
