GOP Rep. Burgess will not seek reelection in 2024

Texas Republican Rep. Michael Burgess on Monday announced that he would not seek reelection in 2024, having served in the seat since early 2003.
"It has been the honor of my life to have gone from a small-town doctor delivering babies, with no prior political experience, to elected to represent my friends and neighbors in the United States Congress," Burgess said, according to The Hill. "It is with a satisfied and grateful heart that I announce that I will not be seeking re-election to the United States House of Representatives in 2024."
"I look forward to serving the remainder of my current term, which concludes in January 2025 by working diligently on behalf of the constituents of the 26th District of Texas," he continued.
Burgess's district includes the western portion of Dallas and stretches north of the city. His announcement follows a similar move from Texas GOP Rep. Kay Granger, who announced retirement plans at the beginning of November. Granger has represented parts of Fort Worth since 1997.
Both districts are solidly Republican and Burgess did not face a Democratic challenger in 2022, instead handily triumphing over a Libertarian candidate.
