GOP Rep. Cammack swipes at Dems 'enjoying' speaker drama, still nominates McCarthy

Florida Republican Rep. Kat Cammack derided Democrats for enjoying the ongoing drama as the House struggles to choose its next speaker, while asserting that Republicans needed to unify and back California Republican Rep. Kevin McCarthy for the post, though he had already failed to claim the gavel five times.

Cammack made the remarks while formally nominating McCarthy for speaker on the sixth ballot. McCarthy has faced stalwart opposition from a thus far intransigent bloc of 20 Republicans who have coalesced behind Florida Republican Rep. Byron Donalds as an alternative candidate.

"Kevin McCarthy has proven that he can get things done," she said. "I understand a lack of trust among some of our colleagues. What I am asking is that we trust the American people who sent our colleagues here."

"The people have overwhelmingly voted for Kevin McCarthy," she asserted, before contending that protracting the GOP's selection of a speaker was only playing into Democratic wishes.

"They want us divided. They want us to fight each other. That much has been made clear by the popcorn and blankets and alcohol," she added, prompting jeers from the Democrats.

"The House is not in order," she then protested.
