Michigan Democratic Gov. Gretchen Whitmer defeated Trump-backed Republican Tudor Dixon in the state's gubernatorial race on Wednesday morning.
Whitmer had faced scrutiny for her handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent impact on the state's education system, issues on which Dixon capitalized.
The Associated Press called the race with 66% of precincts reporting. Whitmer led with 51.8% of the vote to Dixon's 46.5%.
Dixon won a competitive GOP primary following an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
