Alaska GOP unites to defeat Dem Rep. Peltola

Ranked-choice voting and a lack of GOP unity helped the Democrat flip a GOP seat

Seeking to avoid a repeat of the 2022 midterms, Alaska Republicans are coalescing around one candidate this year. In 2022, Alaska Republicans lost the state's only House seat to Rep. Mary Peltola, D-Alaska, after they failed to unite.

Peltola took the lead in this week's top-four nonpartisan primary, with Republicans Nick Begich and Alaska Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom in second and third, The Hill reported.

Dahlstrom, who was supported by former President Donald Trump, dropped out of the race on Friday, leaving just Peltola and Begich.

"I entered this race because Alaskans deserve better representation than what we have received from Mary Peltola in Washington," Dahlstrom said. "At this time, the best thing I can do to see that goal realized is to withdraw my name from the general election ballot and end my campaign."

Peltola won partly because Alaska introduced ranked-choice voting and a divided Alaska Republican Party could not unite behind a candidate.
