France confirmed on Wednesday a case of Ebola linked to the outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 

The case comes as U.N. officials are warning that the Ebola outbreak in the DRC is spreading at an unprecedented rate. 

The patient who contracted the deadly disease is a humanitarian doctor who had recently returned from the DRC. The doctor was transferred to a specialized hospital, ABC News reported. 

The case was detected quickly, and necessary precautions are in place, which prevented the disease from spreading to other people in France, French health officials said. 

"France has specialized capabilities for managing highly transmissible infectious diseases," France's Ministry of Health said in a statement. 

An epidemiological investigation is being conducted to identify any other individuals who may have been in contact with the patient, officials said. They will undergo a 21-day home isolation and be monitored during the quarantine. 

The risk to travelers and the general population of Europe is low, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control said.
