Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on Tuesday announced that his agency was working to enforce price transparency rules on more than 500 hospitals nationwide.

Overall, 519 hospitals have received warning letters from the agency to comply with federal guidelines. 

"For years, hospitals kept Americans in the dark about the true cost of care. Families made medical decisions without knowing the price—and too often got hit with bills that drained their savings," Kennedy said. "That ends now."

"Under President Trump’s leadership, HHS is enforcing hospital price transparency with real consequences," Kennedy added. "[Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz] and I have a simple message for hospitals: Post your actual prices. Come into compliance immediately—or face serious consequences."

HHS, in a separate post, warned hospitals that "the grace period has ended."

The announcement comes as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to lower the cost of healthcare and to provide greater transparency to patients about prices.
