House Republican seeks federal ban on gender transition surgeries for minors
At least 21 states have passed laws or enacted policies banning such treatments for minors.
Louisiana Republican Rep. Mike Johnson has called for a nationwide ban on gender surgeries for minors amid a state-by-state push to outlaw the procedures.
"Even a parent has no right to sexually transition a young child," Johnson said during a hearing on the dangers of "gender-affirming care," the Washington Examiner reported. He further called on the government to end the "mutilation of children."
At least 21 states have passed laws or enacted policies banning such treatments for minors, according to Human Rights Campaign. At least seven are considering such policies.
"So-called gender-affirming care is anything but affirming and caring," Johnson contended. "This is adults deciding to permanently alter the bodies of children who do not have the capacity to make life-altering decisions on their own."
"What is even more alarming is that the central tenet of the transgender movement and its allies is to exclude parents as much as possible from making decisions about the health of their own children," he continued.
