Trump administration to close Long COVID offices despite RFK Jr pledge to fund research
The closure is part of the Trump administration's broader reorganization of the federal government, where each department is conducting its own restructuring to minimize costs and maximize effectiveness.
The Trump administration is reportedly looking to close down its Health and Human Services (HHS) office devoted to researching Long COVID, according to an internal email reviewed by Politico on Monday.
The closure is part of the Trump administration's broader reorganization of the federal government, where each department is conducting its own restructuring to minimize costs and maximize effectiveness.
The email was sent by Ian Simon, the head of the Office of Long COVID Research and Practice. Employees were not told whether they would lose their jobs, nor given a hard deadline for when the office would close.
“We are writing to let you know that the Office of Long COVID Research and Practice will be closing as part of the administration’s reorganization coming this week,” the email reads. “We are proud of what we have accomplished together advancing understanding, resources, and support for people living with Long COVID.”
The email comes despite HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s commitment during his confirmation hearing to direct funding for long COVID research. It is not clear if that research will continue in another capacity.
