Trump-backed Tim Michels defeats party favorite in Wisconsin GOP gubernatorial primary
The Associated Press called the race for Michels who had 47.1% of the vote as of press time.
Businessman Tim Michels emerged victorious in the Wisconsin Republican gubernatorial primary.
Former President Donald Trump endorsed Michels, who also earned the endorsement of former Wisconsin Republican Gov. Tommy Thompson. He defeated former Wisconsin Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch.
Kleefisch racked up endorsements from state Republicans and former Trump officials Vice President Mike Pence, U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley and White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders. Kleefisch served as lieutenant governor under then-Gov. Scott Walker, who also endorsed her in the race.

Also running were Adam Fischer and Timothy Ramthun. Kevin Nicholson appeared on the ballot, despite suspending his campaign in early July.
Michels will go on to face Wisconsin Democratic Gov. Tony Evers in the November election.
