House Democrats introduce bill to name Miami prison after Trump
Earlier this week, conservative lawmakers led by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Penn., introduced the airport legislation, to the consternation of Democrats.
A group of House Democrats on Friday introduced a measure to rename a federal prison in Miami, Fla., after former President Donald Trump, in an apparent retort to an effort by Republicans to rename Washington Dulles International Airport after him.
Earlier this week, conservative lawmakers led by Rep. Guy Reschenthaler, R-Penn., introduced the airport legislation, to the consternation of Democrats, including Virginia Rep. Gerry Connolly, who said at the time that "Donald Trump is facing 91 felony charges. If Republicans want to name something after him, I’d suggest they find a federal prison."
Connolly ultimately followed through on his own quip and on Friday introduced to the measure to rename the Miami Federal Correction Institution to the "Donald J. Trump Federal Correctional Institution," The Hill reported.
The choice of facility appears to reflect Trump's current legal jeopardy in special counsel Jack Smith's classified documents case. Court proceedings have taken place in Miami.
"I cannot think of a more fitting tribute to our former president, Donald J. Trump, than renaming the closest federal prison to Mar-a-Lago in his honor," Connolly said.
