House Republican lawmakers this week adopted an amendment to a defense spending bill that would codify the renaming of the Defense Department to the Department of War, solidifying the Trump-era rebrand.

The Trump administration unveiled the renaming of the department back to its original moniker earlier in the term, though it has not been officially renamed by law and many news outlets still refer to it as the Department of Defense. The House Armed Services Committee this week, voted to include the rename as part of the spending bill.

Rep. Ronny Jackson, R-Texas, introduced the amendment, which passed the committee on party lines, The Hill reported.

The War Department was renamed the Department of Defense in 1947 after the consolidation of myriad service branches under the same administrative head.

The annual defense bill is typically regarded as a "must pass" piece of legislation, though the House and Senate versions often differ and it remains unclear whether the rebrand will reach President Donald Trump's desk.
