House Republicans threaten to revoke federal funding to DA Bragg's office over Trump indictment
Bragg has confirmed that $5,000 in federal funds contributed to his investigation.
House Republicans have threatened to withhold federal funds from Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg's office in response to his office's pursuit of charges against former President Donald Trump over a 2016 payment to Stormy Daniels.
Last week, a grand jury voted to indict the former president in connection with Bragg's case. While the exact charges remain unknown, the case involves Trump's then-personal attorney, Michael Cohen, paying Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about an alleged affair. Trump later paid Cohen and recorded the fee as a legal expense.
Republicans have largely rallied behind the former president, maligning the case as a political witch hunt. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy previously ordered the House to review whether federal funds were involved in any "politically motivated prosecutions."
Bragg has confirmed that $5,000 in federal funds contributed to his investigation, the Washington Times reported. Amid that revelation, some House lawmakers have vowed to restrict funding to Bragg's office.
"We control the power of the purse and we’re going to look at the appropriations process and limit funds going to some of these agencies, particularly the ones engaged in the most egregious behavior," House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said in a Fox interview.
Jordan is also leading the House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of Government, which is investigating instances in which the Biden administration may have used administrative power for political purposes.
The Ohio Republican's comments were echoed by Arizona Republican Rep. Andy Biggs, who called on Congress to "immediately" halt funding to Bragg, per the Times.
A spokesperson for Bragg's office noted that the DA had secured more than $1 billion in asset forfeitures for the federal government and contended that $5,000 represented only a miniscule fraction of that amount.
Trump is expected to face arraignment on Tuesday.
