Maryland Democratic Rep. Jamie Raskin on Friday declared that he would not seek to replace retiring Sen. Ben Cardin, D-Md., in 2024.

Raskin currently serves as the Democratic ranking member on the House Oversight Committee. The lawmaker cited his work on that panel as motivating his decision, Politico reported.

He rose to prominence as the lead impeachment major in former President Donald Trump's second impeachment trial.

Cardin announced his retirement plans in May, indicating that he would end his official tenure at the end of his current term. At least one incumbent Maryland House lawmaker, David Trone, has announced his intent to succeed him.

The seat is considered safely Democratic, but is likely to draw a multitude of candidates for the party nomination. At least four Democrats have announced their primary campaigns, according to Ballotpedia.
