A Texas judge on Tuesday canceled public proceedings for Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's divorce from state Sen. Angela Paxton, R.

Paxton's attorneys told The Hill that private negotiations had made progress and both sides no longer believed a trial was necessary.

“We are optimistic that a final agreement will be reached in the near future," they said.

Angela Paxton announced her divorce from Ken amid the start of his Senate campaign, which ultimately saw him secure the support of President Donald Trump and beat Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, for the party nomination.

The development is likely good news for Ken Paxton, whose tenure as attorney general has faced scrutiny, including an unsuccessful impeachment attempt.

Though the race is expected to favor the Republican, Paxton appears to face a formidable challenger in Democratic candidate James Talarico.
