'Just say aye': Sen. Feinstein told how to vote during committee hearing

California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein appeared confused during a Senate Appropriations Committee hearing on Thursday, during which she attempted to deliver remarks rather than cast a vote on a defense appropriations bill.

"I would like to support a yes vote on this, it provides $823 billion. That’s an increase of $26 billion for the Department of Defense and it funds priorities submitted," she said before being cut off by a staffer, The Hill reported.

"Just vote 'Aye'" the Senator was told. Committee Chairwoman Patty Murray, D-Wash., echoed the staffer's comment saying, "Just say 'Aye.'" The lawmaker ultimately obliged and stated "Aye."

A spokesperson for the California lawmaker ultimately stated the apparent confusion was due to a "chaotic" meeting and said Feinstein was not aware debate had ended on the bill.

Feinstein, 90, returned to the Senate in May after a lengthy absence due to a case of shingles. She is planning to retire at the end of her current term.
