Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., on Tuesday had harsh words for special counsel Jack Smith as he questioned him on his prosecution of President Donald Trump in 2024.

Kennedy questioned Smith during his appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, pressing him on his contacts with then-Attorney General Merrick Garland and his presentation of materials to a federal judge to secure subpoenas.

"You make me want to throw up in my mouth," Kennedy told Smith after he insisted he had served in a non-partisan manner and followed Department of Justice guidelines.

Kennedy's comments prompted an interjection from Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., the ranking member on the committee, demanding that lawmakers show respect to Smith.

Smith brought criminal charges against Trump in 2024 in connection with his alleged mishandling of classified materials and his efforts to challenge the 2020 election results.
