Man in Minnesota allegedly planned attack on Mall of America
Predicating the arrest were several conversations that Mohamud had with a confidential human source in which he allegedly said he wanted to either travel to Somalia to join Al-Shabaab or commit a mass casualty attack.
Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, a U.S. citizen and resident of Minnesota's Twin Cities, allegedly told an FBI informant that he planned a terrorist attack on the Mall of America and that he wanted to join the Somalia-based terrorist group Al-Shabaab.
Mohamud was arrested Tuesday, with prosecutors saying he had planned the attack for late October, CBS News reported. Predicating the arrest were several conversations that Mohamud had with a confidential human source in which he allegedly said he wanted to either travel to Somalia to join Al-Shabaab or commit a mass casualty attack.
He was arrested before enacting his plan and no one was injured in the incident. Minnesota U.S. Attorney Daniel Rosen opined that he had intended to kill "maybe 30 or 60 people."
Minneapolis is home to a large Somali-expat community that has come under fire in recent years over allegations of widespread public funds fraud and alleged financial support for Al-Shabaab.
