Marjorie Taylor Greene bids $100k for lip balm used by Kevin McCarthy, wins
The pair formed an unlikely alliance during the leadership contest and the speaker has reportedly expressed a considerable degree of dedication to that bond.
Georgia Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene on Tuesday successfully bid $100,000 for a stick of lip balm that House Speaker Kevin McCarthy had used.
Her exorbitant bid came as part of an auction held at the Capitol Hill Club during a GOP conference meeting, according to The Hill. A spokesperson for Greene told the outlet that she bid on the lip balm after McCarthy added a visit with his donors and supporters to the lot.
Republican Reps. Jason Smith, Mo., and Stephanie Bice, Okla., also reportedly bid on the lip balm. Greene intends to donate the money to the National Republican Congressional Committee.
Though McCarthy's leadership of the House faced opposition from the conservative wing of the GOP with which the Georgia lawmaker typically aligns, she nonetheless has been a prominent supporter of the California Republican.
The pair formed an unlikely alliance during the leadership contest and the speaker has reportedly expressed dedication to that bond.
"I will never leave that woman. I will always take care of her," he said of Greene in January, an unidentified friend of McCarthy told the New York Times.
