Maryland elects first black governor as Democrats reclaim state's top job

Democrat Wes Moore won election to the Maryland governor's seat, flipping the job as Republican Gov. Larry Hogan leaves office due to term limits.

The Associated Press called the race with 23% of the vote in. Moore took 67.1% of the vote to Trump-backed Dan Cox's 30.6%.

Moore will become the state's first black governor.

Cox won a contested GOP primary with the support of former President Donald Trump, defeating Hogan's hand-picked successor, Kelly Schulz. His win sparked controversy over the Democratic Party's alleged support of him as a potential "spoiler candidate."

Hogan declined to endorse Cox.
