Melania Trump to attend funeral of Rosalynn Carter in rare public appearance
Carter's widower, former President Jimmy Carter, 99, began receiving hospice care in February, but will still attend the service.
Former first lady Melania Trump will attend the funeral of fellow former first lady Rosalynn Carter on Tuesday, marking a rare public appearance since leaving the White House.
Carter died last week at the age of 96. All living former first ladies, including Trump, Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, and Michelle Obama, plan to attend her funeral, which will be held at the Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church on the campus of Emory University, CNN reported. President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, first lady Jill Biden, and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff, and former President Bill Clinton are also slated to attend.
Months prior to her death, the late former first lady was diagnosed with dementia.
"Mrs. Carter has been the nation's leading mental health advocate for much of her life," the family said at the time. "We hope sharing our family's news will increase important conversations at kitchen tables and in doctor’s offices around the country."
Carter's widower, former President Jimmy Carter, 99, began receiving hospice care in February, but will still attend the service. The couple were married more than 77 years. The family plans to further hold a private funeral service for family and friends on Wednesday at the Maranatha Baptist Church.
