House Speaker Mike Johnson will address the UK Parliament in January to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence.

The United States formally declared independence from the United Kingdom on July 4, 1776, though the UK did not recognize the U.S. until 1783. Washington and London have since become stalwart allies on the world stage.

Johnson will become the first American speaker of the House to address Parliament, The Hill reported.

“As our nation commemorates the 250th anniversary of American Independence, I am honored and humbled by Speaker Hoyle’s invitation to address Parliament,” Johnson said.

Johnson's address will take place Jan. 20.
