Ohio Senate approves bans on gender treatments, transgender sports for minors

The Ohio Senate on Wednesday approved legislation to bar transgender athletes from competing on sports teams that do not align with their claimed gender and to prevent doctors from providing an array of gender-related treatments to minors.

The measure cleared the upper chamber in a 24-8 vote along mostly party lines, with one Republican joining Democrats in opposition, The Hill reported. The lower chamber approved the measure 64-28 in June, though it must clear a second vote in that chamber before reaching the governor's desk.

Ohio GOP Gov. Mike DeWine has not indicated whether he plans to sign the measure should it reach his desk.

A total of 23 states have passed laws barring transgender participation in sports, according to the Movement Advancement Project. Twenty-one have barred most gender related treatments for minors while Arizona has only banned surgeries. Some states have enacted one such policy but not the other. Georgia, for instance, has not passed a trans sports ban, but has banned gender treatments for minors.
