Pelosi seems to show support for bill that would give financial aid to illegal migrants for housing
"It's the American Dream being available to more people," Pelosi said, referencing a California bill.
Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., appeared to show support for her home state's legislation that would offer illegal migrants financial aid for housing.
The California state legislature has passed AB 1840 and sent it on to Governor Newsom for his signature. The legislation would allow the California Housing Finance Agency to include illegal migrants in the state's home purchase assistance program.
Pelosi discussed the legislation during an interview on HBO's Real Time with host Bill Maher.
Maher asked Pelosi about the legislation and particularly the modern day Democratic Party's stance on immigration, to which Pelosi responded that immigration "had always been a bipartisan issue."
"But not free housing," Maher said in response, according to Fox News.
"Well, that's not free housing," Pelosi said in response. "It's the American Dream being available to more people."
Later, Maher asked Pelosi if she would vote for the law to which she answered, "Well, I'm not familiar with exactly what that is, but making the American dream of homeownership available to all people is something we have to do for people who are here now."
If passed into law, the program would provide "no-interest loans of up to $150,000 to cover down payments and fees to eligible first-time homebuyers. These include low- or middle-income and first-time mortgage borrowers who are U.S. citizens or noncitizens authorized to be in the country," according to Newsweek.
The California GOP pushed back: "California suffers from rampant crime, a homeless crisis, failing public education and a massive budget deficit, but instead of tackling those issues, California Democrats are passing extreme housing policies that are a complete slap in the face to the 86 percent of Californians who can't afford to purchase a home in the state," CAGOP Chairwoman Jessica Millan Patterson told Newsweek.
"What makes it worse, leave it to California Democrats who can't count themselves out of a paper bag to pass legislation that lacks any mechanism to even fund it. California Democrats are not serious people, and Californians are left to suffer the consequences of this party's incompetence."
