Global majority say their area is good for gay people for the first time
The least-accepting places for gay people were in Africa and the Middle East, the poll showed.
A majority of people in the world for the first time are saying that their area is a “good place” for gay and lesbian people to live, according to a poll released Wednesday.
While 39% of people say their area is “not a good place” for gay people, 52% say it is, according to Gallup’s 2022 world poll, which included 123 locations.
Meanwhile, from 2011 to 2021, Gallup found more than a dozen countries went from majorities saying their area was “not a good place” for gay and lesbian people to live to majorities saying that it is a "good place."
People in European countries tended to perceive their areas as being good places for gay people to live, with 15 countries in the region having more than four in five residents saying so, including 91% of people in Sweden and 90% in Norway.
In Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, more than four in five residents also said their area was good for gay people.
The least-accepting places for gay people were in Africa and the Middle East, the poll also showed.
