Trump more than 3 x ahead of GOP primary rivals in New Hampshire, poll
Trump received 58% support compared to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis' 17%.
Former President Donald Trump is ahead in the 2024 GOP presidential primary polls in New Hampshire with a lead roughly three-times greater than any other candidate.
Trump comes in at 58%, with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in second at 17%, according to an Emerson College poll released Tuesday.
New Hampshire the second state to hold balloting in the Republican presidential primary calendar.
Despite Trump's good primary numbers, the poll shows he may have difficulty in the General Election if he runs against President Joe Biden. In a hypothetical 2024 matchup, Biden leads Trump 42%-38%. Biden is also ahead of DeSantis 42% to 37%.
In their 2020 general election matchup, Biden beat Trump in New Hampshire 52.9%-45.5%, according to Politico.
The 2016 general election in New Hampshire was far closer, with Trump losing to Democrat Hillary Clinton by less than 3,000 votes.
The new poll shows the only possible GOP candidate who could beat Biden Gov. Chris Sununu, who came in at 44% to the president's 36%.
Sununu, who came in with 7% in the primary poll, has not declared his candidacy but said he is "trying to grow the party as Republicans" for now.
The poll was conducted March 3-5 with 1,025 registered voters and has a 3% margin of error.
