Republican Nick Begich will challenge Rep. Peltola in Alaska
"It's clear, we don’t have the voice we need in Congress, and I believe it’s time we restore that voice: for our families, for our communities, and for our future. That’s why, today, I’m announcing my run for U.S. House," he said.
Republican Nick Begich announced on Thursday that he would challenge Democratic Alaska Rep. Mary Peltola in 2024.
Peltola is Alaska's only statewide elected Democrat, having initially won a special election in 2022 before triumphing in the general contest. Begich previously ran in both contests, but split the Republican vote with former Gov. Sarah Palin.
"It's clear, we don’t have the voice we need in Congress, and I believe it’s time we restore that voice: for our families, for our communities, and for our future. That’s why, today, I’m announcing my run for U.S. House," he tweeted.
"As an Alaskan dad, husband, and business owner - I can’t sit back, and simply watch what is happening to our state and country," he also said. "I believe in Alaskan families, our shared values, and the responsible stewardship of our lands."
Begich, who comes from a prominent Alaskan political family, placed third in both the special election and the 2022 general contest. Palin, for her part, has not announced a campaign of her own.
