Republicans advance resolution to block renewed Biden student loan debt plan
More than 4 million people have signed up for the SAVE program ahead of a planned resumption of student loan payments in October.
The House Education Committee on Thursday advanced a bill to block President Joe Biden's income-based student loan repayment plan that the administration created in the wake of the Supreme Court striking down Biden's initial effort.
The Supreme Court in June blocked Biden's original bid to cancel up to $10,000 in debt for most borrowers and up to $20,000 for Pell Grant recipients. The administration speedily unveiled the SAVE plan in its place, which some estimates have contended may come with a price tag as high as $559 billion over ten years.
Republicans seek to block the revised plan under the Congressional Review Act, Politico reported. The committee voted 23-19 on party lines to approve the resolution. Even should the measure secure the support of both chambers, however, Biden is likely to veto it.
