RuPaul promotes drag queens in libraries during Emmys speech

During his Emmy acceptance speech on Monday evening, RuPaul voiced support for engaging with drag queens reading stories at public libraries.

"If a drag queen wants to read you a story at a library, listen to her because knowledge is power, and if someone tries to restrict your access to power, they are trying to scare you. So listen to a drag queen!" he said. So-called "drag queen story hours" have attracted considerable scrutiny from conservative figures in recent years.

Some Republican states, moreover, have taken measures to crack down on other venues that permit children to attend drag performances, including a Florida law that permits the state to revoke the liquor licenses of venues that permit minors to attend drag shows.

"RuPaul's Drag Race" won an Emmy for Outstanding Reality Competition Program, Deadline reported.

"We are so honored to have this award. Listen, you guys are just pure lovely for honoring our show and recognizing all these queens. We have released into the wild, hundreds of drag queens and they’re beautiful. On behalf of all them, we thank you," he also said.
