Santos to run in 2024, even if House expels him
"I understand but elections are tricky. There's no predetermined outcome," he asserted.
Republican New York Rep. George Santos has vowed to seek reelection to his congressional seat in 2024, even if the lower chamber of Congress should expel him prior to the end of his term.
Speaking to CNN's Manu Raju, Santos said he would "absolutely" run in 2024, even should the chamber oust him, prompting the host to question whether Santos could secure the party nomination. His statement followed the House voting to table a motion on his expulsion earlier this week brought by House Republicans. In May, the lower chamber referred a separate Democrat-backed expulsion resolution to the House Ethics Committee.
"Can you win a primary? Given all of these things that are lined up against you?" Raju asked. Santos replied with an emphatic "yes."
"And the general election? This is a Biden-leaning district and you have all these issues against you," Raju continued. "Could I have won the general election last time? Nobody said I could, but I survived," he retorted, to which the incredulous CNN host exclaimed "it was a different situation."

Santos won election in the 2022 midterms, flipping a competitive New York district. Following the contest, however, reporting emerged that he had fabricated parts of his background, including his education and past employment.
He has further come under criminal scrutiny for a litany of shady enterprises and pleaded not guilty last week to federal fraud charges in a superseding indictment.
