Schumer knocks Graham, Scott's 'field trip' to southern border

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Friday decried a planned trip to the southern border by South Carolina GOP Sens. Tim Scott and Lindsey Graham, contending that the pair could have addressed the situation by supporting a plan to pair foreign aid with border security reforms.

"It’s very nice that Lindsey Graham and Tim Scott are taking a field trip to the border. But their actions speak louder than words," he said, according to The Hill. "Sens. Graham and Scott voted to keep the status quo and against the necessary resources to secure the border. We hope their trip will make them see the light and tell Trump to support our bipartisan border agreement."

Graham had been slated to lead a delegation to Germany to meet with NATO allies, but abruptly cancelled the trip to travel to the southern border instead. Earlier this month, Republican senators blocked a procedural vote to advance a $118 billion package including border security funding and support for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan. Conservative border hawks had objected to the border security provisions, claiming they would exacerbate the situation.

Schumer has since pushed a standalone foreign aid bill through the Senate without border security components. The bill is expected to fail in the House.

Graham, who has long been a supporter of aid to Ukraine, has instead joined former President Donald Trump in colling for foreign aid to become loans.

"Helping Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan makes sense, but not this way. As Senator Schumer lauds this Senate supplemental bill, the Speaker has rightly chosen to say this bill goes nowhere in the House," he posted on X. "America’s border is a disaster. We are $34 trillion in debt. It is time to help our allies while also helping ourselves. This bill is rightly DOA in the House. I support the Trump plan to make the supplemental a loan."
