Texas Lt. Gov. Patrick quips about kicking Biden off ballot after Colorado ruling

Texas GOP Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick on this week suggested that, but for the maintenance of Democracy, Texas ought to consider removing President Joe Biden from the state ballot in response to a Colorado Supreme Court ruling deeming former President Donald Trump ineligible under the 14th Amendment.

The court declared that Trump had engaged in an insurrection by inciting the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol Riot and ordered he not appear on the state ballot. The judges did, however, stay their order until Jan. 4 and the Trump campaign has vowed to appeal to the Supreme Court.

In the wake of the ruling, Patrick indicated he had mulled pursuing Biden's removal from the ballot, adding the key caveat "except that we believe in democracy in Texas."

"Seeing what happened in Colorado tonight... makes me think — except we believe in democracy in Texas — maybe we should take Joe Biden off the ballot in Texas for allowing 8 million people to cross the border since he’s been president, disrupting our state far more than anything anyone else has done in recent history," he said on Fox News.

The ruling prompted widespread outrage from Republicans and calls for intervention by the Supreme Court, with many expressing optimism that the top bench would overrule the Colorado court.
