Union Station board agrees to give more control to federal government
The agreement comes after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced in August that his department was renegotiating a cooperative agreement with Union Station Redevelopment Corporation, which controls the station, and Amtrak.
Amtrak and Union Station leaders approved an agreement Thursday to give control of the building to the federal government, including decisions about upgrades and repairs.
The agreement comes after Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced in August that his department was renegotiating a cooperative agreement with Union Station Redevelopment Corporation, which controls the station, and Amtrak.
The Union Station Redevelopment Corporation board and Amtrak approved the agreement unanimously, a Department of Transportation spokesperson told The Hill, and Amtrak will continue to focus on rail operations.
The Trump administration's decision to take over the Washington, D.C., train station comes after President Donald Trump deployed National Guardsmen to the capital earlier this year, and officials have cited Union Station as part of Washington's problem with crime and homelessness.
