Trump and Biden tied for 2024, ex president crushes primary challengers: poll
Green Party candidate Cornel West's inclusion dropped Trump and Biden to 42% and 41% support, respectively, compared to West's 5%.
Former President Donald Trump enjoys a commanding lead over his Republican primary challengers and currently sits even with President Joe Biden should the pair again face one another in 2024.
Trump and Biden took 44% support each in the latest Emerson College survey. Green Party candidate Cornel West's inclusion dropped Trump and Biden to 42% and 41% support, respectively, compared to West's 5%.
The general contest questions also included a hypothetical third-party run from pop/country musician Taylor Swift. When included as an option, Trump claimed 42% support to Biden's 39% and 8% who backed the musician.
Emerson College Polling Executive Director Spencer Kimball indicated that the inclusion of Swift was meant to assess the security of support for either major candidate.
"The Swift test suggests that Biden’s support is softer than Trump’s, whose support is more locked-in. Biden is more vulnerable to third-party options like West, who appears to appeal more to Biden’s voter base than Trump’s," he said.
In the primary, Trump got 56% support, to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis's 10% while the same figure backed tech mogul Vivek Ramaswamy. No other candidate earned double digit support.
Conducted between Aug. 16-17, the survey questioned 1,000 registered voters and has a margin of error of +/- 3%.
