President Donald Trump on Tuesday asked Iran to release a group of women in custody it plans to execute, saying that the gesture would help negotiations.

"To the Iranian leaders, who will soon be in negotiations with my representatives: I would greatly appreciate the release of these women," he posted on Truth Social. "I am sure that they will respect the fact that you did so. Please do them no harm! Would be a great start to our negotiations!!! Thank you for your attention to this matter."

Trump included a screenshot of a tweet that featured the faces of the women, whom the original poster said faced death by hanging. The post did not identify them by name. A ceasefire between the U.S. and Iran is set to expire on Wednesday evening and negotiating teams in Islamabad, Pakistan have yet to reach an agreement to end the war completely.

Trump said on Monday it was "highly unlikely" that he would extend the ceasefire past the planned expiration date, raising questions as to the resumption of hostilities should talks fail.
