President Donald Trump on Monday stated that he was open to granting cooperative nations some exemptions from his tariffs if they made some measure of trade concessions.

The president has made extensive use of tariffs against neighboring nations to encourage policy changes, especially with Mexico and Canada. He has, however, highlighted lopsided trade relations with many nations and expressed a desire to achieve reciprocal trade agreements, meaning that American trade partners would only match American tariff rates.

“I may give a lot of countries breaks. It’s reciprocal, but we might be even nicer than that. You know, we’ve been very nice to a lot of countries for a long time,” he told reporters, further indicating that some American nations may not be able to sustain a reciprocal relationship.

“We may take less than what they’re charging, because they’ve charged us so much I don’t think they could take it," he added. Trump made the remarks to reporters during a Cabinet meeting at the White House.

The suggestion of easing his tariff efforts appears to have resonated with the stock market. The DOW Jones was up 1.37% as of press time while the NASDAQ rose 2.19% and the S&P 500 was up 1.68%.
