President Donald Trump is holding a Wednesday evening dinner with battleground Republicans in tough races as the midterms approach, Politico reported, citing "four people with direct knowledge of the matter."

Trump has yet to commit much of his campaign war chest to aid lawmakers facing reelection, despite his $400 million in cash on hand. Among the Republicans invited to the dinner are Reps. Tom Barrett of Michigan and Derrick Van Ordern of Wisconsin, both of whom face tough contests.

The dinner is set for the Rose Garden on the White House grounds and could prove a pivotal moment for House and Senate lawmakers to win campaign spending from the president.

The midterms are expected to be competitive, with polling showing a tight battle for the Senate and many razor-thin contests in the House. While many surveys have shown Democrats over-perfoming in typically red states, several Republican groups are only now rolling out their ad campaigns.

Lone Star Liberty PAC, for example, recently announced a $15 million ad buy on behalf of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the Senate contest.
