President Donald Trump on Friday offered praise for his top economic aide, Kevin Hassett, after tapping someone else to become the next chairman of the Federal Reserve.

Trump on Friday announced his choice of Kevin Warsh for the post, passing over Hassett, who had attracted speculation for the job himself. The president explained that Hassett would have been a good choice, but that he felt he couldn't afford to move him from his current role.

"Their was great speculation that highly respected Kevin Hassett was going to be named Chairman of the Fed, and a great Chairman he would have been but, quite honestly, he is doing such an outstanding job working with me and my team at the White House, that I just didn’t want to let him go," he posted on Truth Social. "Kevin is indescribably good so, as the expression goes, “if you can’t do better, don’t try to fix it!” Thank you Kevin for doing such a great job!"

Trump also complimented other contenders for the role, saying "Christopher Waller, Rick Rieder, and others, were interviewed for the Fed position. They all would have been outstanding, and have a great and unlimited future with 'TRUMP.' Such amazing talent in our Country. "
